Default Thoughts on Chizik so far... (long)

Hey guys, Cyclone fan here. Not trying to poke open any wounds, or anything like that. Auburn has actually been, over the years, one of the few SEC schools (along with Miss. St) I would pull for, as I have deep respect for land grant schools that are paired up with another in-State school with incredibly obnoxious fans (I hate Alabama).

That said, as you might understand, I have a strong distaste for Gene Chizik. I think he's a spineless coward for the way he left our program with out giving his players more than 2 minutes of his time. That said, at the time we hired him, I was star struck. I thought he was going to do great things at ISU before leaving for the SEC. Turns out, he hired his fishing buddies for coordinators and didn't realize that when you don't have 5 star players at every position that you actually have to coach them, not just stand around and bark at them.

When he hired Malzahn down here, it looked like he had learned his lesson that he's not going to just win games because he's "Gene XX Chizik" and he needed to be surrounded by other good coaches. Then he matched his career win total in his first 5 games. Now it looks like the Gene Chizik we know and love has reared his head. It's obvious that he can't really coach that well, as Paul Rhoads has gotten as many wins in 8 weeks out of "his" (half of our team was recruited by McCarney) players as he got in 2 years. Is that the consensus down here, or do some still think he can get Auburn Football back to where it was? I feel bad for you guys because I've always respected Auburn, and Chizik is such a slimy snake oil salesman. You guys don't deserve that crap. Hopefully your AD will wake up at the end of the year and call Turner Gill back. He should be pacing your sidelines as we speak.

Peace, and good luck the rest of the year. By the looks of things, we might be partying together in Shreveport.

Before we get to answering questions, why is it that your location tells us Des Moines but when you speak of yourself in first person, your location is here in the South.

Because I'm on your message board. By "here", I mean the Auburn community, which albeit virtually, is where this discussion is taking place.

If you guys want proof, the moderators should be able to scan my IP address and it will show up as "West Des Moines, IA" or "Des Moines, IA", if I'm at school (Drake University). Same with cycrazy. I tailgate near him at ISU games, and he truly does live in Ames.

I understand you must be worried about angry Auburn fans, or 'Bama trolls trying to start crap, but that's not what I'm doing at all.

First things first brother man. I would correct/delete the above red, bold words in your post before your whole post gets deleted by a mod.

Second, like Underwood, I am confused on where you are. You say "down here" and speak as if you were among us, but you say you are in Des Moines. What gives? It just raises suspicion you are a trolling bammer posing just to get the folks riled up. And you may not be, its just suspicious.

With that said, I personally don't care for the guy. I think he is 100% inept as a HC and was counting on good assts to bail his tail out of tough situations. Maybe he fixes this, maybe he doesn't. But at this moment, my opinion of him is not very high. I literally threw up the day we hired him.

**EDIT** - I see your explanation to underwood. No worries.

I do not think that CTG would be the answer and I did not think CGC would be the answer either, but then he hired a top-notch staff.

Coaching may be an issue, but it is being clouded by depth and talent.

Yahtzee!

The best choices available at the time (and still are), were Brian Kelly and Gary Patterson. I would have placed Mendenhall and Peterson in the 2nd tier, with Gill in the 3rd tier. Those were my top 5. Look how Kelly and Patterson are holding their own with the big boys. They recruit against them. They beat them. Hell, Cincy is beating the crap out of good teams without their Heisman candidate QB. TCU is destroying teams. Some that are/were BCS teams. Can you say overachieving? Think of what those guys could do at Auburn.

I understand that. Thank you for clearing that up.

About the profanity, I assumed that there was a built in language filter that identified cuss words and asterisked them out (they installed one on CycloneFanatic). Not trying to break the rules.

I for one dont totally buy into this mess being a whole Chizik problem. Like mentioned, he has brought in a very nice group of coaches (not totally sold on Roof). We have some personnel issues that contribute to some of our problems. The problem right now is that we're loosing. When the winning re-ensues, this will not be as a glaring and loud issue. The fact of the matter is that we have an all new coaching staff, and the jury is still out if they will mesh and cut it at Auburn. We have to get the talent deeper in our team also, so that we can compete every week instead of just the first half of the season. Chiziks record at ISU sure doesnt help matters, at all.
My main beef so far is that some changes seem to be in order at some positions but that is beating a dead horse at this point.

This is what started worrying me about Chizik down the stretch. I still thought at the end of the season he was the right guy for the job at ISU, but the only reason was that he was bringing in new coordinators, who oddly enough, were rumored to be Malzahn and Paul Rhoads. It started to become clear that he couldn't win without top notch talent, and a place like ISU, that will get you a hot cup of jack squat. A good coach doesn't need to "out-talent" his opponents, and Rhoads is proving that thus far.

My point: I think you guys probably have the talent, and a better coach would be coaxing more wins out of that. I guarantee you have more talent on the field than Kentucky. That comes down to coaching.

How long of a leash does Chizik have? I think (and obviously I know a fraction of what you guys do about Auburn football) that you need to find a guy who has done something as a head coach, in a non-BCS conference. A guy like Turner Gill (as I mentioned) or Gary Patterson, or Kyle Whittingham.

As I said, I'd much rather see Auburn winning the SEC than LSU, or Bama, or Florida, but if Chizik is who I think he is, that won't happen with him here.
