Default Wide Receivers

Interesting quote from Ben Tate:
“That’s what we’ve been waiting on for the last three weeks,” Tate said. “You can run the ball, pound it, pound it, pound it. That doesn’t matter. You need the wide receivers. Our offense is at its best when they’re making plays.”
from: Auburn's offense wakes up, roars past Ole Miss - Auburn Football - Ledger-Enquirer.com

He is basically echoing what the coaches have been saying for at least 3 years. It's hard to run when they stack defenders in the box, you HAVE to be able to pass to make the defense play you honest.

Seems that our biggest problem has been lack of the right guys at WR. Seems like since Ben & Devin left, we really haven't had that game breaker / consistent threat on the outside. Both of those guys were 4 star recruits weren't they?

Have we gotten any others since that time?
Have they just not panned out?
Have they failed to qualify?

Seems to be the single most glaring weakness on the offensive side of the wall - just fishing for opinions on what happened. Also, are we in on any big time WR for this year?
Do we see Benton, Blake, and Stallworth being big time players in a year or so?

Do you ever have anything positive to say? Every post I see from you is negative......and yes, we do have some good WR receiver recruits.....Antonio Goodwin and Jeremy Richardson are both high 4 starts and we're the front runner for Travon Reed out of La., who is another high 4 star.

As far as Benton, Couch Trooper has already on more than one occassion said that Benton will re-write the record books once he gets in the rotation. Sometimes it takes a year to get a player comfortable with the speed of the game. Stallworth looked like pure speed to me on Saturday, seems he'll be pretty good next year. Let's not forget that Stallworth and Blake are TRUE FRESHMAN.

Give it some time....let the coaches recruit and teach.....we'll be just fine.

We are a lot better off than we were the last two years at WR. Like mentioned, we also have a very good class of WRs coming in. Im not sure what team you are watching but I can see a vast improvement in our WR play in just one year under TT.

Are you kidding?
Negative comments from me?
How in the world do you get that from that post?

I think it is very insightful that one of the most important players on our offense is directly quoted as seeing the problem with the offense as the WR were not making plays down the field.

I was simple asking for opinions on why that is.
Why do you think that happened?

Doesn't it seem to you that is what both coaching staffs have been saying since 2006?

I don't really keep up with recruiting like some on here do, so - was just trying to solicit some opinions on in coming or younger players on the squad, is that negative?

Oh, there's no question things are better than the last two years. BUT, the WR's just kinda disappeared for 3 weeks.
Again, is that a lack of talent, lack of numbers - when one WR falters I'd like to see another step up. If there were enough quality WR's on the roster, I would think one would step up.

I just hope we don't get back were Rod Smith is our ONLY go-to WR.

I don't think that is negative.

Not complaining, just wondering what's in the pipeline.

Yes, I noticed that too but I was thinking that some of that had to do with Todd getting the ball to them but I did see some dropped balls as well. The thing is you can coach that all day long but in the end it is the WRs responsibility to reel it in. I do, however, see a lot of upside to Zachery and Adams. To add to that the potential of the other WRs (mentioned above) are outstanding. The hard truth is that as a fan we really dont know yet because we havent seen them play a whole lot. I will say though, I feel a ton better about or WR position now then I did. Being a WR in HS, for what its worth, I tend to pay attention to route running, blocking and ball handling. I see a vast improvement in all three areas.

Don't take this as a negative - but good comments.

I have also noticed the blocking this year.

I also noticed that they, TZac especially this Sat., have gone and competed for the ball they way C. Taylor would - that is so huge at the SEC level - you just cannot wait on the ball to come to you.

I'd really like to see some good reps from. Benton & Blake this weekend, just to see what they can do.

I'd be willing to bet we do. Hopefully the 1st team can take care of business and allow the second team guys get in there and get a lot of reps.

Yes -TZac said "thats my ball" - i also like the fact that he fought for the football and claimed it in traffic! Benton appears to be physical speicman on the field, every time Stallworth is running the fly sweep or getting to the edge it is positve - Playmaker on the O. I also agree-like to see more of Benton & Blake this week-end.

Imho it wasn't really the lack of talent at wr... it was

1. poor, poor coaching by both TE and WR coordinators. Hawthorne, Dunn, Slaughter, Carr and I'm too tired to remember the name... were all outstanding recruits.

2. 2006 = hugh nall's all freshman OL that couldn't provide QB the time required to develop plays.

Stats will have to wait. I'm too sleepy.
