There was a time when Ronald Wilson Reagan led this nation. A true commander, leader, guide with lofty goals and high aspirations. What happened to that republican party?
After 9/11, the Bush administration had the greatest popularity and support ever seen in modern politics. It was the time to lead, to show the world our resolve and integrity. Unfortunately the republicans got caught in the quagmire of epic proportions fomented by the neocons, with the sole aim of directing the country towards their personal ambitions. I never thought that so soon after such a unity will they stick a dagger in the heart of America, dividing us and polarizing us beyond recognition.
As with every other venture that george bush has gotten hold of, he completely mucked up the job as the president. The government ended up being full of cronies. More than 100 graduates of 'regent university' (ever heard the name of it? That disgrace to education is owned by pat robertson) were working for white house, with clowns like monica goodling becoming the third top person in Justice Department. I can keep going at the failures but I am not writing a book here.
Today republican party is a joke, led by druggies windbags like rush limbaugh and glenn the liar beck. The best we had to offer was .. wait for it... the drama-queen clown sarah palin? No .. really the moron that was a disgrace to every republican that graduated from a college. What direction are we heading into? Where do we go from here?
There is no agenda except opposition. There's no leader except for pompous windbags on tv. There's no clear voice, no regret of yesterday, no hope for tomorrow, no goal for future, no aims at reconciliation, no effort at unity. It's like a bunch of bumbling idiots that got elected on an extremist agenda.
Republicans need to cut ties with the extremist right wing religious nutjobs, the pompous windbags and the liars and druggies. Lets raise from the ashes under some able leadership, a strong leadership reminiscent of the days of RR, with a voice that educated Americans can second.
America has clearly voiced it's rejection of the neocon agendas and religious extremism. Is anyone listening? We deserve a better republican party.
I am not talking about democrats here. My concern is a weakened republican party.
In 2004 John Kerry stood for 'Anything but Bush'. He lost over lame duck and neocons. Democrats realized their folly. In 08 they stood on a platform and gave republicans a historic whuppin.
Today we are shouting 'Anything over Obama', the agenda of opposition, not leadership. The "don't vote for stupid" ($1 to Douglas Adams) campaign makes us look like we are lacking any ability to lead. There's no platform.
Many of the neocons were in the democrat party during RR's era. They switched sides, hijacked and ruined the GOP.

I hope you don't mind a Democrat writing a sentence or two about the Republican plight as I see it. I believe that the genesis of the problems that have plagued the party since the 80's is the one man you seem to admire, RWReagan. I personally and from a business standpoint reject that he was anymore than an actor, mouthing what ever was typed up for him to read. He was a Democrat, no matter what label he used. He increased taxes more than any other President before him. He hurt small businesses (mine included) more than any Republican in history. He devided our country into two classes, the rich and the poor. We still suffer from his beginning and through George W. Bush, who was just lazy as heck, in my opinion. Hope I haven't made any of my Auburn Family mad at me, just trying to express myself to you guys.

I am not old enough to remember much before before RWR. Unfortunately I'll use that as a reference point.
You are not a democrat, I am not a republican, we are all Americans and our common goal is the progress of the country. For that we need both parties with sincere, strong and able leadership. We need strong government and strong opposition, an able opposition with leaders that can guide us with objectivity.
We should be the people that are defended, protected and presented by both sides of the political divide, who sincerely work towards actual progress of the society. Neither party can do it alone.. or it would be too left-centric or right-centric, and neither of that is good for the people.
Reject the 'divide and rule' politics. We are united, not as democrats, not as republicans, but as Americans. Everyone has the right to speak about both parties, regardless of your political inclination... because its your country.
I am sick of the lame-duck ignorant approach of the current republican party. I don't see them progressing or going anywhere but further down. I assure you Americans are neither going to get blackmailed by fearmongers, nor are they going to be brainwashed by druggie windbags, religious nutjobs and stupid hockey-moms. We've grown up and gotten tired of the soundbites. Is that all they can offer? come on. Bring substance, NOW.
xaff,
The attitude you write with is that dreamed of by all real Americans. We are all the same and any division is forced by people who wish to exploit the power of the people to further their own agendas. I am pleased to read what you have written because it is not the usual rhetoric that I read on local blogs. Yes, we need to repair the break and I know where it is. It happened before you were born, probably and it happened when the South was forced to integrate with black citizens. The people of the South who were not lucky enough to learn how to accept the new culture were left to fester in their hatred. As the enforcement of integration moved into the North and West we had riots and other breakage of laws as we experienced here. We still suffer from this malady of non-acceptance of those who are "different", whether they are African black or Mexican brown. Just different is all it takes to trigger those feelings that separate us from others. Money is a big class separator, religion, education all help us to see and separate from 'others'. How do we solve it? We wait and try to live to see it come about when most of the old heads my age die off and you guys straighten it out.

for some reason this thread makes me want to break out in song:
BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His day is marching on.
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on."
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since God is marching on.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on.
He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.
