Default What is the history of the NCAA and NIT tournaments?

The way I remember it...

The NCAA tournament started out as a way for the conference champs to get together and play a tournament to see who was the best. It wasn't that long ago that only 1 team from a conference went.

The NIT was called national but seems like years ago it was New York centric in that most of the teams were from that region.

NIT's been around longer. Older doesn't mean better in this case.

There's a good deal of debate among former players as to whether one and done in the NCAA is better than winning the NIT.

Thanks... finally did a google search of my own and came across some interesting reading on Wikipedia. The history part about the NIT was especially interesting. Here is link to the NCAA info.

The history of the two tournaments is interesting. There is a 3rd post season tournament, the CBI, that started only a year or so ago. Troy is in it this year.

Did you notice that the biggest headlines on al.com yesterday afternoon were those that lamented the fact that Alabama didn't get an NIT invitation?

That's where I first heard about this lower, lower, lower tier tourney. Apparently Bama passed on it last year. Weren't invited this season, I suppose.
