One goal has been reached. A higher one beckons for Auburn's women's basketball team.
With Saturday’s 79-56 victory over Stephen F. Austin, the No. 8 Tigers finished their preconference season at 15-0. They open Southeastern Conference play next Saturday at South Carolina.
“Our goals were to win a championship and go undefeated in the preseason,” said senior Sherell Hobbs, who scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds. “We accomplished one of our goals today. Our next goal is to win the SEC championship.”
And the Tigers, Hobbs and fellow senior DeWanna Bonner agreed, have seen great teams. And they says they have what the same ingredients.
“I definitely think we have all the pieces,” said Bonner, who had 17 points and five rebnounds. “They had seniors just like we have seniors. They had chemistry and we have the chemistry. I think everything is there.”
Said Hobbs: “We have a bench, too. Then we have that leadership and have a veteran team. I think we’re as good as anybody in the country.”
The Tigers jumped to a 14-0 lead on Stephen F. Austin (5-7) and were never in danger.
“I feel very confident,” Fortner said. “I just have a lot of confidence in this team, our veterans and their ability to recognize things on the floor, to compete hard, to know what to do in certain instances because of their experience. It is something that just comes with experience. It just feels good.”
Travesha Jackson had 12 ponts and Alli Smalley 10 for Auburn. Tammara Marion led Stephen F. Austin with 19 points.
