I told Cameron Henderson that, if I was wrong, I would apologize. And that’s what I’m here to do.
I wrote Wednesday that Henderson was no longer part of the Auburn football team. I could sit here and parse words, say Henderson has not been part of the team recently and, according to his explanation, won’t be again until Monday. But that would be trying to make myself feel better.
I am also told there is no indication that Philip Pierre-Louis is off the team. I reported Wednesday that he was. If it turns out he remains on the team, I offer him the same apology.
Reporting news inaccurately isn’t just unfortunate. It’s inexcusable, especially for one who has been doing it for 40 years. It’s fun to take the credit when you break a story. So I’ll take my medicine now.
I could tell you that I had good sources, that I had more than one of them and that, in my mind, I knew Wednesday what I wrote was correct. Those things would absolutely be true. But not all the story has been confirmed to be correct, and that means, no matter what comes to pass in the days ahead, on this day I was wrong.
To be clear, I didn’t say anybody was kicked off the team or disciplined or anything of the sort. But that’s a minor point, really.
Regardless of what happens, who is on the team and who is not, what I wrote on Wednesday was apparently not altoegether accurate at the time it was written. And that’s embarrassing.
All I can do is pledge to you who have honored me with your presence here to work harder than ever at making certain we bring you the best, the most accurate and the most thorough coverage of Auburn football anywhere.
With that, I’m going to take a few days off as planned, lick my wounds and come back Monday working harder than ever.
