Auburn football’s Wednesday’s scrimmage was the second opportunity for Head Coach Alex Golesh and his staff to assess which guys they want on the field lining up next to Quarterback Byrum Brown when the season begins in 17 days. One of the guys the coaches have been riding hard this preseason camp is transfer running back Bryson Washington. Golesh feels he had a better second scrimmage today than the first.

“We pushed Bryson with that first group today…Bryson the last week has shown why he’s been able to do what he’s done the last couple years. He’s taken steps. For Bryson, I mentioned the long drives, he needed that today. It was good for him to push through that…He’s come a long way.”

Golesh told the media he wants to make sure this offense is equipped with a power back aspect. He said Jeremiah Cobb took steps today in showing the coaching staff he can be that guy if called upon. “He’s become more physical. I tell Jeremiah every day we are looking for a big back. He starts foaming at the mouth. He’s grown tremendously there.”

The Tigers again held out Nykahi Davenport from scrimmaging. He has missed the last four days with what Golesh said is some soft tissue issues. The goal is to have Devenport back in full pads by Friday with hopes of utilizing him against Baylor.

“We’re looking to see if he is going to get into that rotation. Before he got banged up he was in the conversation,” Golesh said.

Another young guy that continues to get reps is Alvin Henderson. Golesh said he got a bulk of the reps with the twos. This comes after Henderson stood out in scrimmage one and has gotten praise from his coach Larry Porter about trying to earn a spot on special teams. He isn’t the only one.

A name Auburn fans may not be as familiar with is Christian Burnette. Golesh shared a role Burnette could be put in come week one. “He’s had a really good camp in pads. He’s gonna play on special teams for us and he has earned his time on the field.”

When the team returns to the field on Friday, Auburn Undercover is expected to hear from Cornerbacks Coach DeMarcus Van Dyke and Linebackers Coach Brad Wilson. We are also scheduled to hear from some of those position players after practice. Stay tuned to auburnundercover.com and @AUUndercover on Twitter for the latest updates.
