During the preseason, Auburn Head Football Coach Alex Golesh has talked about having a solid four man rotation at the running back position. The player expected to get a large bulk of the carries is the Tigers only returning starter on offense and senior Jeremiah Cobb. Cobb told Auburn Undercover how he feels about where his offense is heading into Saturday’s game against Baylor.
“I think we're all in a good place now we're just working on the details about everything and just trying to be fast about that.”
Golesh says he has challenged Cobb to be that bruising back and emerge as a leader. Auburn Undercover asked Cobb how he is taking those comments to heart and using them on the practice field. “I've definitely been more vocal. The other way that I just lead by example… they make it real easy too. Guys listen, they really want it,” Cobb said.
Cobb also said this year’s running back room has been his favorite since he’s been at Auburn. Cobb further told Auburn Undercover he’s looking forward to getting out there and playing in a real game setting alongside quarterback Byrum Brown. “I'm very excited to see him play… It’s exciting to go see him actually do it live. I'm ready for it.”
Brown, also speaking to the media on Tuesday, feels going up against DJ Durkin’s Auburn defense in practice has prepared him for what Baylor could throw at him Saturday. Durkin’s unit held nothing back in preseason scrimmages against the offense. “We picked those up so I'm fully confident in our o-line and running backs seeing those looks and being prepared for it.”
Brown also feels his wide receivers will help him get into the flow of the game on Saturday, adding he has full confidence in their ability to catch the ball and make plays for the offense “They want the ball and when the ball is in the air it’s theirs. They get open, physical, faster I mean I really like what I'm seeing on those guys,” Brown said.
Auburn has not had a 1,000 yard rusher in a season since 2024. Last year, Cobb came up just 31 yards short of that milestone. The Tigers have not had a quarterback rush for over 1,000 yards since 2013. Cobb and Brown will look to become the first running back/quarterback combo to both rush for 1,000 yards in a season since 2010, when Michael Dyer and Cam Newton led the Tigers to a national championship.
