The face of Auburn baseball has earned a distinct honor that will have his name cemented in glory for eternity.

On Wednesday, the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association announced Butch Thompson as part of the Class of 2026 for its Hall of Fame, marking the third coach in Tigers history to be awarded the honor. Thompson joins Paul Nix and Hal Baird in that list.
Thompson is set to be officially inducted on Dec. 10 at The Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover, alongside Michael Blair of Maplesville High school and Drew Miller of G.W. Long High School.
Since becoming the head coach of the baseball program, Thompson has gotten himself to third in wins, recently having finished his 11th season on the Plains. In that time, he has led Auburn to seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament, five regional titles and two trips to Omaha for the College World Series.
The Tigers have hosted a regional four of the last NCAA Tournament’s and back-to-back super regionals. The five regional titles are the most in program history, and with all five of those being since 2018, Auburn is one of five programs to achieve that feat.
In addition, the Tigers have made it into the top 10 in their final ranking in each of those five years, while being in the top 25 in three separate instances.
Thompson came to Auburn after being an assistant coach and associate head coach at Mississippi State from 2009-2015. Before then, he was an assistant for the Tigers, an assistant for Georgia, an assistant for Birmingham Southern, the head coach for Jefferson State Community College, an assistant for Birmingham Southern again and an assistant for Huntingdon College. His career began at Huntingdon in 1993.
The head coach has been inducted into two other halls of fame, including the Itawamba Community College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Mississippi Association of Community College Conference Hall of Fame in 2021.
Thompson’s current contract with the program is one that saw a recent extension, keeping him on the Plains through 2031.
