Southern Miss coach Blake Anderson explains challenge of facing Byrum Brown
Southern Miss will visit Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday hoping to do something no other team from the Sun Belt has been able to do. Since their inception, in 2001, Auburn is undefeated against teams from that conference. This will be the first meeting between Auburn and Southern Miss since the Golden Eagles joined the conference in 2022. Head coach Blake Anderson talked about the game plan going into Saturday.
“We need to be prepared to play our best. Give ourselves an advantage if there is such. We under no means are going into this game for moral victories.”
Anderson said the talent level and physicality are about to ramp up for their schedule. He knows it will be a challenge trying to stop Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown. Anderson shared why Brown is such a formidable guy to go against.
“He can be a huge challenge for us just in one-on-one settings alone. He can do everything. He can throw it. He can run it. It can make the field big. They are going to play lightning fast in terms of tempo.”
Anderson feels a way his team can shut Brown down is by putting pressure on him. Another area of concern, after week one, is Anderson feels his wide receivers did not attack the ball on offense. An area where Anderson was pleased after last week’s win was in the run game. “Both (Steven Robinson and Jamarice Wilder) ran the ball physically through contact. Made guys miss. Finished and fell forward. Tremendous amount of encouragement that we are moving in the right direction between oline, tight ends, running back room to be able to run the ball to affect the game at a high level.”
Southern Miss will enter Saturday’s matchup 1-0. The Golden Eagles defeated FCS opponent Alcorn State 49-3 last weekend. Southern Miss holds five wins against Auburn, the most recent coming in 1991. The group of five has 83 total wins against the SEC. Southern Miss hopes to add their name to this list when they and the Tigers kick things off at 6:45 from Jordan-Hare Stadium.
