Auburn opponent watch: How the Tigers' remaining schedule fared in Week 1

The first week of college football is in the history books.

Auburn narrowly escaped Baylor 17-16, as the SEC went a combined 16-0 in the opening weekend. As Week 2 approaches, let’s break down the remainder of Auburn’s schedule and how its future opponents fared in their openers.

Southern Miss

Result: Southern Miss defeated Alcorn State 49-3

Southern Miss won its opener for the first time since 2023 with a 49-3 victory over Alcorn State under first-year head coach Blake Anderson. The Golden Eagles rushed for over 300 yards, headlined by Steven Robinson’s 123-yard performance on 23 carries with a trio of touchdowns.

Florida

Result: Florida defeated Florida Atlantic 66-21

Jon Sumrall’s debut started on the right note, as the Gators demolished Florida Atlantic. Florida scored the most points it’s scored in a game since 2021, as quarterback Aaron Philo went 16-for-21 passing for 275 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Jadan Baugh led the rushing attack with 160 yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns.

Vanderbilt

Result: Vanderbilt defeated Austin Peay 28-9

Both Blaze Berlowitz and Jared Curtis played in Vanderbilt’s opener, which ended early due to lightning. Berlowitz went 11-for-16 for 149 yards, while Curtis went 7-for-9 for 60 yards in his much-anticipated debut. Belowitz and running back Sedrick Alexander both added rushing scores.

Tennessee

Result: Tennessee defeated Furman 56-9

True freshman Faizon Brandon looked the part in Tennessee’s 56-9 victory over Furman. Brandon completed 13 of 17 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns, adding 68 yards rushing on 10 carries with a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Next up: Tennessee (1-0) travels to Georgia Tech (0-1)

Georgia

Result: Georgia defeated Tennessee State 63-3

Georgia looked like one of the more dominant teams in the country once again in its dismantling of Tennessee State. The Bulldogs tallied 660 yards of total offense without turning the ball over, while limiting their opponent to just 109 total yards of offense.

Next up: Georgia (1-0) hosts Western Kentucky (0-1)

LSU

Result: LSU defeated Clemson 51-10

Lane Kiffin began his LSU tenure by embarrassing Clemson on the national stage, so much so that he was seen shooting hoops on the sideline mid-game. Sam Leavitt completed 16 of 28 pass attempts for 230 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Leavitt was a weapon in the run game, tying running back Dilin Jones for the team lead in yards rushing with 113. Both Leavitt and Jones had two rushing touchdowns in the win.

Ole Miss

Result: Ole Miss defeated Louisville 41-38

Ole Miss held off a fourth quarter comeback from Louisville with a game-winning field goal as time expired to notch its first win of the season. Trinidad Chambliss threw for 336 yards, three touchdowns and had one pass intercepted in the victory.

Arkansas

Result: Arkansas defeated North Alabama 31-14

It wasn’t the most electric debut for Ryan Silverfield and Arkansas, but a win is a win. The Razorbacks turned it over three times in the win over FCS North Alabama.

Mississippi State

Result: Mississippi State defeated Louisiana Monroe 62-13

Mississippi State tallied 762 yards of total offense and quarterback Kamario Taylor was responsible for five touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ opener. Taylor can sling it, but the road gets tougher in the coming weeks.

Samford

Result: Samford lost 22-18 to Southern Illinois

The Bulldogs are now 0-2 after dropping its home opener to Southern Illinois. Quarterback Gabarri Johnson threw for 156 yards, two touchdowns and had a pass intercepted. Ken Cherry led the team in rushing with 44 yards on seven carries.

Up next: Samford (0-2) travels to Tennessee Tech (2-0)

Alabama

Result: Alabama defeated East Carolina 48-10

Keelon Russell completed 18 of 30 passes for 256 yards and added another 86 yards on the ground as Alabama cruised by East Carolina, scoring five rushing touchdowns. Ryan Coleman-Williams hauled in five receptions for 130 yards.
