For the first time since 2005, Auburn leaves Athens in the win column.
The Tigers upset No. 1 Georgia 27-24 Saturday night, ending the Bulldogs’ nine-game win streak over Auburn. Here’s what several Auburn players are saying following the win.
Alex McPherson on his game-winning field goal:
“Man, God is good. I really just going out there, wanting to execute for my team. They put me in the position. Hudson Kaak, Hudson Powell, had a great snaP, great hold. Did their job, made my job pretty easy. I was just glad to do that for them, for this team. They played so dang hard, I am so proud of them. Man, it was just a great win for the program.”
McPherson on watching the kick go through the uprights:
“Honestly I was like, 'Did that just happen?' It's kind of the moments you dream of since you were a little kid. That was my first game-winning field goal attempt, so it's awesome to knock it down and do that for this team.”
Quarterback Byrum Brown on the win:
“It feels really good. Just everyone doing their job -- that's what it should look like. Plenty of things to clean up, but super, super proud of this group for battling and fighting.”
Brown on what the win means to the team:
“It means a lot. You train, and when the result isn't favorable, you can tend to get down. But like Coach Golesh preaches, be process-driven, and I think we truly bought into that. And you see it here today. Got the result we wanted. Still got a lot of work to do, but really excited, really hyped for this Auburn football team.”
Offensive lineman Cole Best on what’s going through his mind:
“Just shock. Just pure shock. No one thought we would be able to do it. No one thought we would come in here to Athens and win. It was a rush of emotions. Happy for this team. Happy for these guys. We’re together everyday battling and fighting through the ups and downs. Just for this team that has continued to fight and swing and keep working and keep a positive attitude, I can’t think of anything better.”
Linebacker Elijah Melendez on how the team handled being down early:
“Really just staying connected, staying together. Every time we came back to the sideline, it was, 'Bro, we've got to stay in this. This isn't over.' First quarter, they were running a bunch of different formations and trick plays. Eventually, they had to play football and beat us. They had to eventually beat us at football.”
Defensive lineman Cody Sigler on Auburn winning in Athens:
“It means everything, really. I remember coming to the sideline knowing the Auburn moments. Auburn is known to not pull through. But I feel like with Coach AG, I feel like this place is turning around. He's really emphasizing we gotta go out here and finish.”
Sigler on not quitting trailing 14-0:
“They're the No. 1 team in the country for a reason. That's a really good football team. I think we are too. But the last games that we lost, we had them. We either tied ‘er up at halftime, and we let them come back. And I feel like this whole week, they really stressed on it. We knew we were going to be in that position. We start fast, and we gotta finish strong. I feel like that's what we really did.”
