Breaking down Golesh’s first season, Auburn’s path forward | Bowden Ball

AUBURN, Ala. — A new era of Auburn football is underway, and former Tigers coach Terry Bowden sees both opportunity and challenges ahead for Alex Golesh in his first season on the Plains.

Bowden joined Ronnie Sanders on the season debut of “Bowden Ball: Auburn Edition” to examine Golesh’s arrival, Auburn’s 2026 roster and what history says about first-year coaches at Auburn.

Bowden knows something about immediate success. He took over Auburn in 1993 and guided the Tigers to an undefeated season. But he cautioned against judging a coaching tenure solely on its first year, pointing to Pat Dye, Shug Jordan and Tommy Tuberville as Auburn coaches who endured difficult debuts before building successful programs.

The discussion also focused on Golesh’s up-tempo offensive system and how quickly Auburn can adapt. Golesh brings an offense he helped develop at Tennessee and later used as head coach at South Florida. Quarterback Byrum Brown’s familiarity with the system could help accelerate the transition.

Bowden also pointed to Golesh’s decision to retain defensive coordinator DJ Durkin as potentially significant. Maintaining continuity on defense while improving an Auburn offense that has struggled in recent seasons could give the Tigers a chance to make progress quickly.

Auburn’s schedule could provide an early opportunity to build momentum before a difficult October stretch featuring Tennessee, Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss.
